Jiaogulan Called the Immortality or Miracle Herb
78Jiaogulan the Immortality Herb
Jiaogulan Natures Greatest Treasure
Jiaogulan (pronounced jee-ow-goo-lahn), a member of the cucumber family, is a low-lying vine with five-leafed clusters, hence its botanical name Gynostemma pentaphyllum (from the Greek penta = "five" + phyllon = "leaf). Jiaogulan has been used as a daily tonic in China for centuries. However, it is only recently gaining attention worldwide because of recent scientific research supporting a great range of health and longevity benefits. In fact it most likely will greatly exceed the health benefits of any plant as of yet discovered. Currently more than
300 research papers have been written documenting over 54 health benefits associated with jiaogulan.
Jiaogulan is now acknowledged as the greatest health-giving herb in all of Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) even exceeding superstars like the goji berry. However, for thousands of years, this incredible plant was overlooked by TCM practitioners.
The first written description of Jiaogulan was in the 14th in TCM medical texts. However, when Jiaogulan was described in that first text from the Ming Dynasty, it was confused with another, totally unrelated medicinal plant. In addition further descriptions in later textbooks did not give accurate accounts of its many and diverse health properties. As a result of this confusion
Jiaogulan was virtually totally ignored and thus little used in TCM formulas and prescriptions.
The other main reason Jiaogulan largely remained a secret is because of where it grows in the very rugged mountains of Southern China. The ancient founders of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) were an elite group of physicians and scholars who served on the Emperor's court in Beijing located in the north of China. So the combination of the extreme difficulty of traveling to the largely inaccessable mountains of Southern China and the ego trip of what could these mountain hicks teach us scholars, conspired to keep Jiaogulan hidden for centuries.
Many herbalists consider Jiaogulan to be the world's most potent herbal adaptogen. Adaptogens are special plants that can increase the body's resistance to everyday stress, trauma, anxiety, and fatigue. Adaptogens accomplish this by a unique two-way balancing action on neuro-endocrine and immune function
Chemical analysis has shown that adaptogens work because of something called saponins.
Ginseng, is a renowned adaptogen because of its complement of 28 saponins, but Jiaogulan blows past ginseng in that it contains more than 100 different saponins. Almost 4 times as many, this is an astounding number proclaimed by experts to be the broadest and most powerful range found in any plant in nature. Jiaogulan's saponins not only include all the major saponins found in ginseng, plus additional unique forms called gypenosides that are found only in Jiaogulan. In addition different gypenosides are found in different various parts of the plant, so the most potent and beneficial Jiaogulan product would obviously make use of the entire plant.
Jiaogulan is also a very powerful antioxidant, in fact research suggests that Jiaogulan can greatly promote the body's own production of its most important antioxidant enzymes like SOD.
Let's examine the Science Research Studies Behind Jiaogulan
In one study saponins isolated from jiaogulan were tested for their effect on lipid metabolism. Administration of the saponins had beneficial effects on serum levels of triglycerides, lipid peroxide, total cholesterol, phospholipids, and glutamic pyruvic transaminase.
A study of 80 patients who took a gypenoside extract twice daily for five months showed that the gypenosides could increase the levels of cellular superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the body's very powerful antioxidants.
A study involving 610 people ages 50-90 found that the levels of the antioxidant SOD in this group increased 300%, to be equivalent of healthy teenagers. SOD is an extremely powerful antioxidant produced in the body.
A recent study from National Taiwan University investigated the immune-boosting potential for jiaogulan and found that the herb was able to increase the production of different immune cells.
Chinese researchers recently determined that polysachharides in jiaogulan are "a very important ingredient" responsible for the herb's ability to enhance immune function.
The Guiyang Medical College study found that athletes taking an oral form of jiaogulan and gypenosides experienced a definite adaptogenic response—they were more vigorous and alert, with quicker reflexes and less nervousness.
Australian researchers recently found that certain gypenosides in jiaogulan are able to protect the function of endothelial cells in the blood vessels, thereby promoting cardiovascular health.
That's only 7 of the over 300 studies on jiaogulan documenting over 54 specific health benefits.

I've read a lot about this. Particularly in TCM as you mention. Unfortunately, we take an herb and use it indiscriminately as in the case of ma juang (ephedra), a toxic drug sold here over the counter in unknown formulas - then condemn the ancient culture's medicinal practices.
Maybe we have learned. Thanks for all the info!
Wow! Never heard of this. Thanks!
Good information. How long have you been using Jiaogulan? I would be curious to know what health benefits you saw...
Great information. Thanks for sharing.
Great hub. I consume goji juice, acai, and whatever I see that will help me maintain an acid/PH balance. I also take ambrotose which I think is the most important supplement to my diet. I sell no products and will not profit from any. I've suffered from auto vs bicycle accidents and other trauma as well as our food being compromised. I've suffered from inflammation, pain, and numbness. I've made incredible advances against these maladies in the last few years. This is a great hub. I'll try to add jiaogulan.
I don't aspire to live long but I wish to live well. Thanks
@Micky Dee Sounds like you're really taking some good health supplements! Personally I take goji juice and Ambrotose. And yes, Ambrotose is a really good nutritional supplement!
I never know about this before. I am glad to read this hub. I get new information here. good work
very useful info thanks
Good Hub - thanks for sharing. I've been reading about this and hearing some friends talk about it. I appreciate, by the way, your reference to the many studies - too easy to just get carried away talking about the benefits. You do a nice job backing it up!
Good information on this herb...
